Mathematics — Perspectives & Ethics
Notes
Perspectives in Mathematics
Mathematical truths are universal — a theorem proven anywhere is true everywhere. But the development of mathematics is culturally influenced. The concept of zero appeared independently in multiple civilisations; who gets credit and which contributions are remembered reflect cultural .
Ethics in Mathematics
The three stakeholders: pure mathematicians (develop ideas), applied mathematicians / technologists (build tools), users (present results). Typically, the user bears the greatest ethical .
Key distinction: (systematic distortion) vs. (a different viewpoint). A misleading graph introduces bias; using a different y-axis for a different purpose reflects perspective.
Discussion claim: “Mathematics itself is completely neutral, so it cannot raise ethical issues.”
Is this correct? Even if mathematics is neutral, who becomes responsible for ethical problems that arise when it is applied?
